Day Five: Psalm Five

Good Morning,

Psalm 5 is one of those Psalms that reveals how to handle life’s problems in an effective way by waking up and starting the day taking one's requests and concerns to God. The wise Christian looks to God to solve their problems. They don’t take matters into their own hands. They don’t let what people say push their buttons. Instead, they live their lives waiting expectantly for God to answer because their trust is in Him. Not giving up at the first sign of an unanswered prayer and looking for the answer throughout the day is walking in expectation!

Some people run to the bottle, drugs, sex, etc. to soothe or protect them from their problems; however, Psalm 5 tells us where to run and that is to God. We also see in this Psalm that God is our shield and protector; this is the best place to run. We don’t need a back-up vice; God should be our number one go-to-strategy!

You may have heard the old saying sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. We ALL know that is untrue. God provides a healthy and safe coping strategy. God comforts us and pours peace over us when we ask Him to meet us!

There are many more nuggets to digest in Psalm 5. Go ahead and take a peak! I dare you!

Psalm 5 (NIV 1984)

For the director of music. For flutes. A psalm of David.

Give ear to my words, O Lord,
    consider my sighing.
Listen to my cry for help,
    my King and my God,
    for to you I pray.
In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice;
    in the morning I lay my requests before you
    and wait in expectation.
You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil;
    with you the wicked cannot dwell.
The arrogant cannot stand in your presence;
    you hate all who do wrong.
You destroy those who tell lies;
    bloodthirsty and deceitful men
    the Lord abhors.
But I, by your great mercy,
    will come into your house;
in reverence will I bow down
    toward your holy temple.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies—
    make straight your way before me.
Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
    their heart is filled with destruction.
Their throat is an open grave;
    with their tongue they speak deceit.
10 Declare them guilty, O God!
    Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins,
    for they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
    let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may rejoice in you.
12 For surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous;
    you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

Questions to ponder:

1.     Does King David instruct us to start out the day praying or to just get up and start the day without asking God for help?

2.     What do you think motivated King David to look to God so often, and do you think he started out that way or did it develop over time?

3.     Verse 5 tells us that “God does not take pleasure in evil, and that He cannot dwell with wickedness.” Should the same go for us?

4.     Verse 9 talks about people’s mouths being an open grave. Do you know anyone whose mouth is full of words of deceit and evil?  Do you like to be around them? What do their words seem to cause?

5.     Will we receive joy and blessing or pain and stress when we TRULY wait on God? Go back and read the words of hope in verses 11-12 if your stumped!

6.       Is Psalm 5 relevant for today’s Christian? If so, why?
