Day 58: Psalm 58-What's the Skinny on Our Response to Evil Doers?

Dear Friends,
What’s the skinny on our response to evil doers? Do we spit in their face, tell them off, punch them, or turn the other cheek? Psalm 58 tells us that God will avenge them (verse 10). When God avenges them, it will be to His standards, punishment, and consequences.  I know it's tough to let go and let God handle it, exspecially when the evil doer is hurting someone we care about like a friend at school who is having untrue rumors spread about them. This even happens in the workplace. So, what do we do when God comes on the scene and avenges them?

It  tells us that when that day comes that we should be glad. For some, this may be a tough pill to swallow. Recently there was a shooting during the Dark Knight movie in a theatre. Since he has been caught, he will have a trial and go through the legal process. Yet as this process initiates, I find it amazing that a woman who lost her child and baby she was carrying when she was in the theatre wants to ask the courts to consider lessening his sentence. That is God’s mercy and grace for sure. Let’s remember that none of us deserve it, but He freely gives it!  Don’t forget that it is okay to accept that God punished them too.

You see God would rather us trust and wait on Him than take matters into our own hands. Friends, do not take vengeance on evil doers because "vengeance is mine says the Lord" (Romans 12:19). That is pretty clear. We need to be readers, hearers, and doers of the Word (Matthew 7:24-26). When you get in a pickle and evil has come your way, remember that God is on your side and He will avenge you!

Psalm 58 - New International Version (NIV)

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[b]

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?
    Do you judge people with equity?
No, in your heart you devise injustice,
    and your hands mete out violence on the earth.
Even from birth the wicked go astray;
    from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
Their venom is like the venom of a snake,
    like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
that will not heed the tune of the charmer,
    however skillful the enchanter may be.
Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;
    Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!
Let them vanish like water that flows away;
    when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.
May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,
    like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.
Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns —
    whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.[c]
10 The righteous will be glad when they are avenged,
    when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Then people will say,
    “Surely the righteous still are rewarded;
    surely there is a God who judges the earth.”
