Day One: Psalm One

Good Morning,

Today we begin reading Psalm 1. When you read below, you will see that included both the NIV and the Message translations because they are both amazing. The Message Bible is a “fresher” interpretation, and many people find that it is easier to understand because it is in written in “today’s language”.

Back to Psalm 1, this is one of my favorite Psalms because it gives Christians great insight on how to live a Godly life and stay on the right track, which is God’s “plan or track” for your life. Now read and enjoy Psalm 1, consider the questions, and then comment.

Psalm 1: New International Version (NIV)

who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
Lord, but whose delight is in the law of the     and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,     which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.
Blessed is the one
Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,     nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Psalm 1
The Message (MSG)
How well God must like you— you don't hang out at Sin Saloon, you don't slink along Dead-End Road,
you don't go to Smart-Mouth College.

2-3 Instead you thrill to God's Word,
you chew on Scripture day and night.
You're a tree replanted in Eden,
      bearing fresh fruit every month,
   Never dropping a leaf,
      always in blossom.

4-5 You're not at all like the wicked,
      who are mere windblown dust—
   Without defense in court,
      unfit company for innocent people.

6 God charts the road you take.
The road they take is Skid Row.

Questions to ponder:

1.     What does King David warn us about (verse 1)?

2.     What does King David tell us will keep us on track (verses 2-3)?

3.     Is his advice relevant for today’s Christian?

4.     What do you think it means to be “like a tree planted by the streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-whatever they do prospers” (verse 3)?

5.     What does the way of the wicked lead to (hint: see verse 6)?

Reflection and comment:

Why do you think God inspired King David to write these words for us? What speaks to you in this scripture?
