Day 60: Psalm 60- Spilling the Beans Leads Us to Faith

Dear Friends,

Psalm 60 reveals that we are all like David. We are people who wonder where God is at junctures in our lives. We may have contemplated, from time-to-time, if God has left us out in the desert to rot. Sometimes we hold these feelings in, which is spiritually unhealthy. Instead, we need to spill the beans in God's presence and release our faith once again. I have always thought this cliche had a negative connotation until today.

In Psalm 60,  David felt these same feelings; he was human. He thought that God had left him, taking away His blessings, love, and protection.  When crisis comes, we revert back to our old thinking.  In verses 1-2, David is begging God back. He can’t get his mind around why the battle is so hard and why they are not winning. Yes, God has not left him; nor has He left you!

David has a temper tantrum, speaking his mind and making his requests known; but in the end, he reverts back to trusting in God and speaking words of faith. In verses 11-12, David states that “human help is worthless”.  He says that “In God we will do our best; He’ll flatten the human opposition for good.” David spills what he has been holding in his heart: fear, doubt, and unbelief. Once he has spilled the beans, he is freed to praise, trust, and have faith!

Do you speak words of faith in tough situations? Do you turn your fear and rage into praise? Follow David’s example. Let your requests known to God; spill the beans; and connect with God’s presence.  David knew how to press in, and now so do you!

Psalm 60 -The Message (MSG)

 1-2 God! you walked off and left us, kicked our defenses to bits
   And stalked off angry.
      Come back. Oh please, come back!
   You shook earth to the foundations,
      ripped open huge crevasses.
   Heal the breaks! Everything's
      coming apart at the seams.

 3-5 You made your people look doom in the face,
      then gave us cheap wine to drown our troubles.
   Then you planted a flag to rally your people,
      an unfurled flag to look to for courage.
   Now do something quickly, answer right now,
      so the one you love best is saved.

 6-8 That's when God spoke in holy splendor,
      "Bursting with joy,
   I make a present of Shechem,
      I hand out Succoth Valley as a gift.
   Gilead's in my pocket,
      to say nothing of Manasseh.
   Ephraim's my hard hat,
      Judah my hammer;
   Moab's a scrub bucket,
      I mop the floor with Moab,
   Spit on Edom,
      rain fireworks all over Philistia."

 9-10 Who will take me to the thick of the fight?
      Who'll show me the road to Edom?
   You aren't giving up on us, are you, God?
      refusing to go out with our troops?

 11-12 Give us help for the hard task;
      human help is worthless.
   In God we'll do our very best;
      he'll flatten the opposition for good.
